Threads and Traces, Midfire and stoneware clay, dug local clays, slips, underglaze and glazes., 28 x 26 x 20cm. 2024

I orient myself with the form of a place, the tracks, the contours, interventions and possession, through maps. I wayfind, create paths, shortcuts, connections and build my knowing of the place. I leave traces where I walk, threads of the stories I weave.

Threads and Traces takes me on a journey through places I know, on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country, through the suburbs of Canberra.  It explores this through the deep time materiality of wild clay and earth pigments, maps and paths. Through the slow process of walking the streets, collecting and processing material and laying down clay my attachment to these places deepen. Going beneath the surface on a sensory engagement with place I seek out the threads of stories held in these streets and this ancient material.
